Maybe bite down on the leaves 2 times every 10 seconds if you need a guide. Keep the leaves pressed against the outside of your gums or under your tongue. Just don’t let them sit in your mouth without contact. They will get stuck in your teeth, push through that discomfort. It will not taste great, push through that discomfort. I interpret her to be the Lady Salvia that I have read about in so many other trip reports, and I ask for her to take me with her over and over again. She looks into my face and then agrees too.
Fresh leaves result in more tannins that dry out the mouth and have a stronger bitter taste. However, fresh leaves by a plant is a beautifully unique experience in my opinion. Quidding is the act of absorbing Salvinorin from the mucous membranes in the mouth, usually attained by chewing salvia leaves. I had seen her silhouette formed by vines during my first trip, and she had also appeared several times for short periods of time during this trip.
TL;DR quidding salvia is the best way to take salvia in my opinion. It is very subtle and is best experienced in silent darkness. The chewing process is not super comfortable, but I recommend starting with 3 grams of dried plain leaf. On your phone, I recommend starting a stopwatch once you’ve started chewing the leaves.
